How do buying tickets on cruises work?

Me and my sister and probably her boyfriend plan on going on a cruise but how does it work? I mean, do we each buy a room, can we share a room? I guess what I'm asking is when we purchase a ticket, do we each get a room? Can we all share a room and split the cost of the room and pay for a ticket? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Apparently carnival cruises will stop having cougar themed cruises. But let not your heart be troubled, Norwegian Cruises will continue this great social experiment.
