Are Hollywood films watchable anymore?

   You sound like a bit of a feminist to me??? it depends upon what your definition of what a hollywood movie is (filmed in LA, american actors, any american film???)? because most every film can have some relation with LA/Hollywood)? And as to the repetition of film plots, it is very popular in today's movies because we can only ever write so many different ideas, today movies are being thrown out there and that is why you see many movies today not surpassing their budget (Avatar was exception not because of its plot rather because of its visuals-something unlike we have seen before. The first time i saw the movie i was blown away by the realism and somewhat blinded by other aspects, and when i watched it the second time i nearly fell asleep. People will have an entirely different view once they see it on dvd without 3d.) As for the actors in movies there are people who want to see the average joe as the lead, but the majority of people want to go to movies to see the stars (its our real life version of a fantasy world… Just as there were people threatening to commit suicide over "Avatar" because they weren't able to live there.) Im sorry but movies with explosions are movies meant to have explosions, though Michael Bay takes it over the top, im pretty sure you rarely ever see a romcom with an explosion? If you like movies with strong female actors try watching some Meryll Streep movies (most of her films dont have any explosions) If you like good male acting watch Jack Nicholson, his characters are more 1-d (being a crazy dude all the time) but he always has fun with it and actually makes you believe he's crazy, and in a sense if the actor can make you believe he is that character than he has done his job. Try watching some scorsese films, not just the recents like shutter island, or the departed… but watch taxi driver, raging bull and good fellas, also watch the aviator, pretty fun depiction of howard hughes of course with some variations. If you haven't seen older movies (prior to 1970's) then i suggest you watch some: east of eden, 2001: space odyssey, 8 1/2… the woman in films then weren't so weak and showed a sense of presence, however it is natural for men to be more dominant in most all media: frankenstein, hamlet, the great gatsby, etc. I can clearly see that you dont like action movies and the majority of comedies today are just plain stupid, you either like chick flicks or dramas but im leaning towards the latter, and the majority of films that do well at the oscars are dramas so i would suggest you watch those to find some movies that you would like.
